calm birthing for you and your baby

Doing the hypnobirthing course with Chris was one of my favourite parts of pregnancy – we went to three different ante natal classes and this was by far the best.  Although I was pregnant, my husband and I hadn’t spent much time thinking about what that would mean long term or how we wanted to approach bringing up a child.  The course not only prepared us for the birth but made us talk to each other and help each other deal with our fears.

Another key plus was that it gave my husband a clear role in what can otherwise be a daunting time for men so when I finally went into labour properly we had a plan of what we were going to do.

Chris is sort of like a big sister combined with a very wise friend.  Her practical tips and humour but us both completely at ease with what is a very intimate subject.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

About Me

13th May 2010, 06.31….my son was born in a peaceful calm way, but how did I get there, from the place I started?

I came to HypnoBirthing® through a strong fear about my ability to carry and birth my son. I was given Mary Mongan’s book on HypnoBirthing, read it in about one week and immediately signed up to a course. From the moment the course began I knew that the honesty and logic of the programme suited both my mind and soul. I quickly began to feel positive and excited about my pregnancy and becoming a mum.

The more I learned and read the more I understood how all I was doing was re-learning something my body already knew, forgetting the stories I had been told and trusting that my body which had nurtured this baby within me could also birth it, naturally and safely. When the day arrived I found that the relaxation techniques I had been taught enabled me to calmly birth my son with ease.

The experience blew me away, I looked at other women with complete awe and amazement, I realised in those moments after my son was born how powerful it is to be a woman and how magical it can be to carry your child and give birth to it. It is an experience I deeply wish to help others achieve, and I know that through the HypnoBirthing course and the renewed trust in your body it is something that can be achieved.

What is HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing is a complete birth education programme, that teaches simple but specific self hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques for a better birth. HypnoBirthing is much more than just self hypnosis or hypnotherapy for childbirth. With HypnoBirthing, you’ll discover that severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour.

In class you’ll learn how to release the fears and anxieties you may currently have about giving birth, and how to overcome previous traumatic births. HypnoBirthing lets you discover and experience the joy and magic of birth – most importantly, you’ll learn how to put yourself back in control of your birth – rather than blindly turning your birthing experience over to your doctor or midwife.

HypnoBirthing doesn’t mean you’ll be in a trance or a sleep. Rather, you’ll be able to chat, and be and in good spirits – totally relaxed, but fully in control. You’ll always be aware of what is happening to you, and around you. HypnoBirthing doesn’t require any particular belief system, or prior experience. Some of our mums (and especially their husbands!) have been very sceptical at first – until they experience it for themselves.

In short, HypnoBirthing allows you to experience birth in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear and tension that prevents the birthing muscles of your body from functioning as Nature intended them to.

Why choose HypnoBirthing?

  • HypnoBirthing dramatically reduces the discomfort felt during labour as women are encouraged to work with their body, not against it
  • HypnoBirthing reduces and often eliminates the need for chemical anaesthesia, episiotomy, and other interventions such as inductions
  • HypnoBirthing reduces the need for Caesarean sections
  • It lessens fatigue during labour, leaving the mother feeling fresh, awake and energised as she brings her baby into the world
  • It can shorten the thinning and opening phase of labour by several hours and allows the birthing mother to use the natural pulsations of her body to breath her baby down to the crowning stage, rather than pushing for long, exhausting periods of time
  • It reduces the risk of pelvic-floor damage
  • Encourages bonding between mother, baby and birth companion before, during and after the birth
  • The birth companion is an integral part of the birth, not just an onlooker
  • Babies don’t get dosed with painkilling drugs during birth, they’re born alert and better able to breast-feed.
  • It almost entirely eliminates postnatal discomfort
  • Birth is returned to the safe, beautiful, peaceful experience nature intended

Labour was really tough but the hypnobirthing techniques helped me so much during the latent stages. I managed to stay at home just using my breathing techniques, positive affirmations/rainbow relaxation and a tens machine until I was 7cm.

I listened to the affirmations and rainbow relaxation on repeat for almost the whole 14hours. Even at the end when I was pushing I still had my headphones in!
